Daniil Medvedev is back in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the latest chapter of their combustible rivalry. The fifth-seeded Medvedev won 6-4, 7-5 and became only the fourth player, after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, to reach the last eight of the tournament in three straight years.
There was no real drama this time. The two have traded verbal flare-ups in previous meetings over the years, including in the 2022 Australian Open semifinals.
Jodar Comes Back Again
Earlier, Rafael Jodar also reached the quarterfinals after losing the first set for the third straight match. The 20-year-old Spaniard beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. He had previously come back to beat Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round and Jiri Lehecka in the third round.
The 12th-seeded Jodar, who received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, will face Casper Ruud next. Ruud advanced after fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired from their match with a suspected knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the first set.
Paul and Bergs Set Up Medvedev Clash
Tommy Paul won 7-6(5), 6-4 against Zizou Bergs, who had beaten Carlos Alcaraz on Monday. Paul will play Medvedev next.
The quarterfinal lineup for the top half of the draw was set on Tuesday. Alexander Zverev, the top seed, will face Alex de Minaur, while Arthur Gea will meet Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
